Mentors can help you make the most of your Chinquapin garden plot

Need some gardening advice? Want to know how to fight pests organically? New to Chinquapin Gardens and not sure what to plant or when? Your fellow gardeners are here to help!

In 2006, a Chinquapin gardener suggested establishing a list of mentors who are willing to help other gardeners with information and other assistance about gardening at Chinquapin.

The Chinquapin Gardens Advisory Board adopted this suggestion and has compiled a list of Chinquapin gardeners who have indicated a willingness to be a mentor to other Chinquapin gardeners.

When you are out in the gardens and see these gardeners out in their plots, don’t be afraid to stop by and ask them for advice. Some of them have gardened in the area for decades and are happy to share what they know. You can also shoot them an e-mail or give them a call if you have questions or need some tips.

Additional garden mentors are welcome. The important characteristic for mentors is to have a willingness to assist other gardeners at Chinquapin. To add your name to this list, e-mail Michele Late.

Students brighten Chinquapin Organic Gardens through Project Discovery

Chinquapin Organic Gardens is pleased to welcome students from T.C. Williams High School to our gardening community.

Discovery SIgnThrough Project Discovery, a college-access program that serves disadvantaged youth, high school students are learning about nature and gardening here at Chinquapin Park. Besides gardening, the group holds gardening parties each Wednesday during the gardening season from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with guest speakers.

Gardeners are invited to stop by and join in the educational fun. Lorien MacAuley, youth program specialist with the Alexandria Department of Human Services, is the leader and contact person for the group, which has two plots in the gardens. The students are looking for extra plants and seeds as well as weekend watering assistance. If you can help, contact Lorien.
